What Is a Crypto Exchange?

A plain guide to what a cryptocurrency exchange is, how buying and selling works, and what to check before you sign up.

The short answer

A crypto exchange is a platform where you buy, sell and trade cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. You deposit funds, place orders, and the exchange matches your order with other traders at the current market price.

How it works

After you create an account, you deposit crypto or stablecoins such as USDT. You can then buy other coins on the spot market, or trade futures contracts that follow a coin's price. When you are done, you can withdraw your coins to your own wallet.

Centralized vs decentralized

A centralized exchange (CEX) like UTS Exchange holds balances for you and matches orders on its own system, which makes trading fast and simple. A decentralized exchange (DEX) runs on a blockchain and you keep your own keys, but trades are usually slower and cost network fees.

What to check before you sign up

Look at trading fees, withdrawal fees, which coins are listed, security features like two-factor authentication (2FA), and how support can be reached. Read the risk disclosure, especially before trading with leverage.
